AbstractSincetheearly20thcentury,scholarshavemadeaseriesofresearchesonthenon-interrogativeusesofinterrogativepronounsfromdifferentperspectivesinChina.Althoughtherearemoreandmoreelaboratedresearchesnowadays,studiesontheforeignstudents’acquisitionofnon-interrogativeusesarenottakenseriouslyyet.However,thenon-interrogativeuseofinterrogativepronounsincontemporaryChineseisquiteacommonandcomplexphenomenonandforeignstudentshavedifficultylearningthemindeed.Withthemethodologycombiningdescriptionandexplanation,basedonalargecollectionofdatafromthenativeandinterlanguagecorpora,thisthesisfullyexaminestheforeignstudents’acquisitionofnon-interrogativeusesof“shui”(who)--atypicalinterrogativepronouninChinese,aimingatprovidingsomeimplicationsforteachingChineseasasecondlanguage.Thisthesisconsistsofsixparts.Thefirstpartisabriefintroductiontothiscorpus-basedstudy,includingtheresearchobjects,purpose,significanceandmethodology.Chapteroneismainlyabouttheclassificationofalltheusesof“shui”(who)onthebasisofpreviousstudies.Therearetwomajortypesandeightsub-categories.Twomajortypesare:interrogativeandnon-interrogativeuses.Eightsub-categoriesarelistedasfollows:primaryquestion,secondaryquestion,universalreferring,substitution,anaphor,exemplification,basiccommonuseofexistentialreferring,indicationofemotions.Amongthem,primaryquestiontogetherwithsecondaryquestionconstitutesthewholeofinterrogativeuses.Substitution,anaphorandexemplification,speakingfromabroadsense,couldbewithinthescopeofexistentialreferring.However,inviewoftheiruniquestructures,wedistinguishthemfromthebasiccommonuseofexistentialreferring.Accordingtosuchastandardofclassification,wedrawoutsamplesfromthenativecorpusandmakeastatisticalanalysis.Itturnsoutthatthefrequenciesofnon-interrogativeusesaremuchhigherthanthatoftheinterrogativeusesonthepartofnativespeakers.Chaptertwomainlyanalyzesandcomparesthefrequenciesofallthenon-interrogativeusesof“shui”(who)byforeignstudentsbasedonthesamplescollectedfromtheinterlanguagecorpus.Ontheonehand,wefindth
