ENTR 3004 New Venture Planning Year of study and semester Third or Fourth year, second semester Credit Value 10 Level III CATS Points Level LIII Pre-requisites None Co-requisites None Aims To enable learners to develop the practical transferable skills required to produce and present an effective new business venture proposal to first stage funding. Outcomes Knowledge and understanding Having successfully completed the course unit, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of : the identification of a potential business idea from own knowledge/experience base; the role of investment in new venture creation; the importance of a business plan in new venture creation; the significance of Intellectual Property and Intellectual Property Rights in new venture creation. Intellectual skills Having successfully completed the course unit, you will be able to: evaluate alternative theoretical concepts, models, frameworks, tools and techniques which facilitate the development, presentation and evaluation of new venture business proposals; analyse personal motivation for new venture creation; evaluate alternative approaches to creating and starting a new business venture; Subject specific skills [where appropriate] Having successfully completed the course unit, you will be able to: Research the market for your business venture; Protect your idea through formal IPR and/or competitiveness as appropriate; Identify management team requirements to take the business idea forward; Approach VCs and other potential investors, including potential first customers; Deliver an ‘elevator pitch’ Present a business plan convincingly to a professionally qualified audience; Relate the scientific/technical/discipline base underpinning their business idea to the practical knowledge of business venturing.
