ABSTRACTEnergyandenvironmentcrisishaveledtomorestrictemissionslegislationandfleetCO2targetsdemandforvehicleengines.Gasolinedirect-injectionandleanburn,gasolineenginedownsizing,hybridelectricvehicleandmanyothertechnologiesarebeingdevelopedforhigherenginefueleconomy.Atkinsoncycleiswidelyusedcombinedwithothertechnologiesbydifferentdegree,forowningahigherthermalefficiencycomparetoOttocycle.ThispaperinvestigatedtheworkingprocessoptimizationandengineperformanceofanOtto-Atkinsoncycleenginebaseonvariablevalvetiming(VVT)andhighcompressionratiotechnologiesusinga1.6Lgasolineengine.TheobjectiveistoimprovethefueleconomyinpartloadconditionwiththeAtkinsoncyclewhilemaintainthefullloadtorquewiththeOttocycle.First,asimulationofeffectsonOtto-Atkinsoncycleenginebyparameterswasdoneusingaone-dimensionalmodelset-upwithGT-power.Themainparametersundersimulatingincludeintake-valveclosingtiming,intakedurationandgeometrycompressionratio.Baseonthesimulationresult,anOtto-AtkinsoncycleenginewasachievedbyreplacingthepistonandintakecamshaftofthebaselineOttocycleengine.Severalexperimentsoffullloadandpartloadconditionsbybothengineshavebeendone.AsetofconclusionscanbemadebycomparingexperimentresultsofthebaselineOttocycleengineandthereformedOtto-Atkinsoncycleengine.ComparetothebaselineOttocycleengine,thefullloadtorqueoftheOtto-Atkinsoncycleengineisnearlythesameexceptforadecreaseof2%-5%inlowspeedunder2000r/min.howevertheaveragefueleconomyimprovementisabout5%atfullloadcondition.Fueleconomyimprovementinpartloadconditionareaisabout4%-10%exceptforverylowloadcondition.Andtheimprovementismostsignificantinlowandmediumloadconditionswhichareusedcommonlyinapassengercar.Theimprovementoftheseconditionsarelargerthan8%.Moredeeplyconclusionscanbemadewiththeanalysisofthecombustioncharacteristicsinthecylinder.Byusingthelateintakevalveclosurestrategy,theOtto-Atkinsoncycleenginesignificantlyreducedpumpingloss,thusimprovethefueleconomy.Byincreasingtheexpansionratioandoptimizingtheeffectivecompressionratio,theOtto-Atkinsoncy
