ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIamespeciallygratefultomysupervisor,professorLiGuanxue,forhisvaluableinsightsandinspiringsuggestions,forhispatienceandgenerosityinspendingtimediscussingquestionsconcernedwithmythesisaswellasforhisguidancethathelpsmefinishthisthesissoquickly.ThanksshouldalsogotoalltheprofessorsandteachersinForeignLanguageCollegeofHenanUniversity,fromwhomIhaveobtainedalotofknowledgeandhelpinthepostgraduatelife,withoutwhichIcouldneverhavefinishedmypostgraduatestudyandthisthesis.AndtheForeignLanguageCollegeprovidesmewithgoodacademicatmosphereandalotofmaterialsformythesis.Besides,IwouldliketoextendmythankstoallmyclassmatesandfriendswhohavedonevariouskindsoffavorswheneverIneedtheirhelp.Thethesispresentedhereisattributedtoalltheseexcellentpeople,soIwilldedicatethisworktothosewhohavehelpedandbackedmeallthetime.AbstractIronyisapervasivelanguagephenomenonwithdistinctivecharm.Itisnotonlyseenasarhetoricaldevice,butalsoagenreofcommunicativestrategy.Forexample,thespeakersaid:“Whatalovelydayforapicnic”onarainyandblusteryday.Itisnotonlyasimplerhetoricaldevice,butalsothespeaker’snegativeintentioninpositivewords,thatis,wehadbetternothaveapicnictoday.Foralongtimeinhistory,researchestowardsironyareconstrainedinthefieldofrhetoric,andlaterextendedgraduallytopsychologyandlinguistics.Unfortunately,thesestudiesmainlydealwiththedisputationofitsrhetoric,structure,andpragmaticfunctionsandsoon.Inordertomakeadeepinterpretationofirony,somestudiesconductedbylinguistshituponthecognitivemechanismofironywithinspiringtheories,suchasrelevancetheory(RT)andconceptualintegrationtheory(CIT).RTandCITrespectivelyaimtoidentifythemeaningconstructionandregarditasthedynamicinferentialprocessofcognition.However,relevancetheory,asageneralguidingprincipleforcommunication,doesnotrevealtheinnerdynamicmechanismofmeaningconstructionincognition.Conceptualintegrationtheorymakesupthisdrawbackbythemappingandprojectionamongdifferentspaces,butitislackofageneralguidingprinciple.Therefore,itispossibleandnecessarytocombineRTandC
