AcknowledgementsThispaperisaccomplishedundertheinspirationandinstructionofmyrespectedsupervisor:AssociateProf.QiTao.Iamquitethankfultohim,whotookgreatpaintorevisetheearlierversionsofmydissertationandprovidedmewithinsightfulcommentsandvaluablesuggestions.IwouldalsoliketoextendmythankstoalltheprofessorswhohaveprovidedmewithknowledgeofEnglishlanguageandliterature,whichisveryusefultothewritingofthisdissertation.Then,Ishouldacknowledgeadebttothosewhoseideasorworkshavebeenadoptedinthedissertation.Atlast,mygratitudegoestomyfamilymembers,myfather,mymother,andmyfather-in-lawandespeciallymymother-in-lawandmyhusband,withouttheirconstantunderstandingandsupport,thisdissertationwouldnevercomeoutasthepresentform.AbstractHemingwayisoneofthebest-knownwritersofthe20thcentury.Formanyyears,thecriticshaveharpedonhisuniquecreativewritingstyle,however,fewscholarsorcriticshaverealizedthatHemingwayisessentiallyaphilosophicalwriter.Thereasonslieinthefactsthathisworksarepackedupwithconcretevisualandsoundimages,hisprotagonistsareactivistsratherthanthinkers,andheseldommakesauthorialcommentsinhisworks.Allthesefactorsmakehisworksseemtobelackofphilosophicalconnotations.Nevertheless,criticsgenerallyassociatehisworkswithnihilism,existentialismandstoicism.Theaimofthispaperistodecode,aspreciselyaspossible,thephilosophicalmessagesburiedinHemingway?sworksthroughanintertextualreadingofHemingway?sworksandNietzsche?stheories.Firstofall,thispaperarguesthatHemingway?sbasicattitudetowardslifeisnihilistic.UnscramblingNietzsche?sideology,thenihilisticthemeconsistsofepistemologicalfailure,valuedestructionandcosmicpurposelessness,whilevaluedestructionandcosmicpurposelessnessarealsomanifestedinHemingway?sworks.AsfortheformationofHemingway?snihilisticattitudetowardslife,therearesocialaswellaspersonalfactors,especiallyhiswarexperiences.Thefirstterrifyingwoundhadalastingeffectonhim,whichdestroyedhisillusionsaboutcourageandglory.ThewaralsodestroyedthetraditionalvaluesbasedonChristianityandshockedhisbeliefandfaith.Then
