Shanghai Normal University Master of ManagementAbstractAbstractAs a leader and administrator of a school, the professional knowledge and ability of the principle is the key for the school’s development. The good governance of the school needs not only the principle’s initiative professional ability but also continuous advancement, which is namely the process of professional development. As a consequence, it is very important to explore the process of the principle’s professional development, discovering the characteristics and law of the process.The sample of the research, Mr. Gu, an excellent principle of the WuJing Third School of MinHang District, has being the principle of the school for 17 years since Dec, 1997. He is the typical yet particular because few could be the principle of the same school for such long time in Shanghai and even China. With the advancement for such a long time, the principle’s idea is becoming mature, stable development could be continued. As a case study, the researcher went to the school one or two days per week from Sep. 2012 to Dec. 2014, observing the principle’s behavior, discussing with him and other teachers. And then, the recorded material could be documented, analyzed and summed up, concluding the characteristics of the principle.The result demonstrates the process of the principle from an ordinary teacher to an excellent principle, including six characteristics in school administration. On the idea of school development, the principle identified the position of the school, encouraging initiative participation of teachers and students, emphasizing students’ natural development. On the idea of cultivating with culture, the principle emphasized construction of material and spiritual culture, and implemented them in every aspect. On the idea of curriculum and instruction, the advantage of district-based curriculum, school-based curriculum and expanding curriculum has been activated by the principle, curriculum caring on students’
