As a terrible enemy of injustice and confusion， Mark Twain wrote scores of attacks on the villainous and fraudulent pursuits of dishonest people， and on the weak， insipid facades of hypocrisy. He was not only good at using humor， but also good at using various kinds of symbols. This paper intends to analyze three of the most frequently used symbols in his works： river， kids and female. River often symbolizes a kind of quiet， peaceful， tranquil beauty， freedom and resurrection. Kids symbolize his favor for childhood and children， and the conformity between individuals and society. Female symbolizes love and goodness as well as calmness， compensation. Introduction 　　Mark Twain，pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens， occupies an important place in the history of American literature. In order to make anything out of himself， Mark Twain had to struggle with his environment from the beginning. He rose to become a world famous writer， lecturer and traveler before he died in 1910. Many papers have been written about his works from different perspectives. Some people said that he was the first true American writer and was the Lincoln of American literature.
