Course description:
The mental ill health and mental health of university students have attracted much attention recently. University student suicidal behaviors can be an extreme form of manifestation of mental ill health amongst these individuals. As future leaders in society, it is important that university students possess not only intellectual competence, but also psychological competence, to meet various future challenges. This course utilizes a cognitive-behavioral model and will give students an in-depth look at key issues related to stress, depression and suicide from a biological-psychological-social perspective. Moreover, through tutorials, they will practice some of the taught life-skills to bridge knowledge and practice.
Course Aims:
To increase students’ knowledge about stress, depression and suicide.
To enhance students’ awareness and self-understanding relating to everyday life events, and mental well-being.
To introduce students evidence-based self-monitoring and stress-reduction techniques to deal with possible stressors and depression.
To cultivate a positive attitude towards taking care of one’s mental health, as well as others, based on a holistic wellness model.
