Comparison of Two Microwave and Two Probe Methods for Measuring Plasma Density Scott Knappmiller, Scott Robertson, and Zoltan Sternovsky Abstract—Four types of electron density measurements are compared in the same device: cylindrical probe, disk probe, microwave cavity, and microwave hairpin. The measurements are made in hot-filament discharges in a soup-pot type of plasma device with and without multidipolar surface magnetic fields with densities up to 2 x 109 cm-3 and electron temperatures of 0.16-0.9 eV. The hairpin and cylindrical probe give densities which are in close agreement for all conditions. The cavity measurement is consistently about 40% higher, perhaps as a result of higher electron density near the filaments. The density from the disk probe is in good agreement with that from the cylindrical probe and the hairpin for plasmas without multidipolar containment, but with multidipolar containment the disk probe densities are 20% higher on average, which may be due to the higher density of secondary electrons in the plasma when there is magnetic containment. Introduction The electron densities determined by different methods may differ by as much as a factor of two. Densities in low-temperature plasmas are most often determined from the current-voltage characteristics of disk or cylindrical Langmuir probes. Microwave methods of measuring density include the cavity method,, which gives a weighted volume-averaged measurement, and the hairpin resonator method, which gives a localized measurement. In this work, density measurements by these four methods are compared usin
