Style guide proposal for graphs in EEA core set of indicators This document contains a proposal for a guideline for graph construction in the EEA core set of indicators. This proposal should facilitate both people reading the graphics and graphic production in EEA products. General remarks (applies to all graph) Data delivery: Graph and underpinning data should follow the guidelines in the paper: Instructions to Authors. Titles: The title should be as short and precise as possible and country names and years should be left out of the title. The title should be described in the Excel sheet, but outside the graph area. Titles inside the graph area will be removed in the publications and in the IMS uploading process anyway. (See figure 1) X- and Y axis: The y-axis explanation should be placed on the top of the axis in vertical direction. This is more readable instead of the Excel default horizontal placing. The x-axis explanation is not needed as long as it shows time series or country names. There is no reason to have unnecessary information in the picture. (See figure 1) Legend: Sometimes graphs are intuitive easy to read and you really don’t need a legend. In most cases however, a small legend without borders is convenient. Where it is possible the legend should be placed inside the graph. If the space is too tight, the legend should be placed below the graph (in one or two rows) or to the right of the graph. If the legend is placed to the left or on top of the graph the first thing the reader will see is the legend. The graph itself will then become secondary. (See figure 1) Background colors: All background colors should be white. It goes for the graph itself and the canvas behind the graph. In this way the graph is much more readable printed on a black and white printer. (See figure 1) Text: The text size in Excel-sheets is normally scalable and resizes every time the graph resizes.
