Lesson Title ‘Work’ (1)
Lesson Aims
To develop positive attitudes towards Barnsley as a place of work
To acquire an understanding of basic economics
To develop the Key Skills of students
Lesson Objectives
By the end of the lesson pupils will be able to:
describe the main features of Primary, Secondary and Tertiary industries
give examples of these from the Barnsley area
explain / give an example of a Public Service Industry
say how businesses in the local economy depend on each other
Activities:
Introduction to the concept of ‘work and the business economy’
Distribute Worksheet 1
Pupils complete Task 1– What do you know already about jobs in Barnsley?
Share ideas with the rest of the group.
Pupils complete Task 2 – Jobs in our school.
Share ideas with the rest of the group – discussion re: most important job in schools.
Key point – school as a site of work/public service industry.
Pupils complete Task 3 – Jobs that depend on school existing.
Extension task – complete a dependency diagram.
Using Worksheet 2 – Look at definitions of industrial sectors explain/discuss, then watch the first half of the video.
Ask pupils to classify the firms featured under the headings Primary, Secondary (Manufacturing), Tertiary (Service) industries. Extension task – locate examples via yellow pages / A-Z etc.
