The Thirty-nine Steps -----By John Buchan The Background The Characters The Plot The background Before the WW1,the relations between European country was very complicated. Germany wanted to start a war to gain more colony, and set up a espionage squad(间谍组织）named “ black stone” to murder the Greek premier minister Karolides and sharpen the relations between other European country . This story is about how the leading character Richard Hannay fight against the “black stone”. Character introduction: Richard Hannay ---He came back to Britain from South Africa before the World War One . Franklin P. Scudder– An America who was killed by “black stone” for he knew their conspiracy. Sir Harry--A kindhearted Liberal Candidate who introduced Hannay to Sir Walter( Harry’s godfather, the English foreign minister) Plot introduction: Hannay met Scudder in London. Scudder told Hannay about the “black stone”. And gave him a notebook in which “the thirty-nine steps” was mentioned. Hannay was curious about that. A few days later, Scudder was killed by “black stone” for he knew their conspiracy. The real killer make the police believed that Hannay was the killer. In order to escape the hunt from both the policemen and the killer from “black stone”, Hannay experienced an extremely thrilling time of escaping. On the way of escaping, Hannay met different kinds of people. He pretended as a trader, a farmer, a roadman …, and also he gave different people different anonym(假名). There were many times he was nearly be killed, but thanks to his wittiness, he headed off these dangers. At last he met Sir Walter (Harry’s godfather, the English foreign minister). As the Greek minister had been murdered, Sir Walter believed Hannay’s words. Then the minister held a conference to deal with the conspiracy of Germany.
