Representative: John Donne Characteristics: bold and ingenious conceits complex and subtle thought, frequent use of paradox, a dramatic directness of language, rhythm derives from living speech. Themes: Love, death, and religion, etc. Metaphysical Conceit An elaborate, exaggerated metaphor, usually strained or far-fetched in nature, comparing two incredibly dissimilar things. Unlike the conceits found in other Elizabethan poetry, most notably Petrarchan conceits, which formed clichéd comparisons between more closely related objects (such as a rose and love), Metaphysical conceits go to a greater depth in comparing two completely unlike objects. John Donne is considered a master of the conceit. Who is John Donne? No man is an island, Entire of itself. Each is a piece of the continent, A part of the main.
