A Special Topic on Packaging ---On packaging functions At this semester we began to learn our first professional courses—Fundamentals of Packaging Engineering. Studied this course, I know more and more packaging functions. Each product has its own fragility, hardness, fatigue limit and so on. How to use the packing materials to protect the product in good condition during distribution? We should consider it carefully. The most common packaging materials are corrugated paper and foam. This can reduce the damage of vibration during transport. I only know a little packaging function before study this course, and now I have recognized the relationship of theory and reality. The basic packaging functions have different degrees of importance, depending on the particular packaging level and intended destination. The primary package for a power tool may be strong enough to protect the product and withstand the rigors of shipping, this single package may feature all the necessary information to inform and motivate the consumer. In order to find the most suitable materials, we should examine the characteristics of various packaging materials. So we should do a lot of experiences. When designing packaging we need to take the nature of products into consideration, such as corrosive, flammable, toxic and easily marked. During the storage and transport of flammable products, we should mark the warning signs, such as “Don’t smoking”, or Significant marker on the surface of the packaging. We should pay attention to segregate the subject to odor transfer products, such as tea and soap, which are very easy to odor. Before the refrigerators and air conditioners transportation, we should select the appropriate method of transport and handling, because these items can easily scratch the surface. “Protect” refers to the prevention of physical damage, while “preserve” refers to stopping or inhibition chemical and biological change.
