AbstractComparedtoconventionalmagneticcardtechnologies,RFIDsaremuchmoresuitableforharshconditions.TheUHFRFIDhasthefeaturesofreadingseverallabelsatonetime,strongpenetrability,readingandwritingrepeatedly,largeamountofmemory,lowcostofpassivedigitallabels,smallvolume,usingconvenientlyandlonglifetimeaswell.ThewidelyuseofUHFRFIDhaspromotedtheresearchanddevelopmentofthechipsforUHFRFIDreaders,whichhasgotbigattentionbyacademiaandindustry.BasedontheISO18000-6TypeCprotocol,thespecificrequestsontheentiresystemofUHFRFIDreadershavebeenanalyzedinthisthesis.Thesolutionoftheentiresystemandtransmitterstructurehasbeenproposedaftercomparingseveralcommonsystemstructures.ThekeyRFfront-endcircuitsincludingaQVCOandaquadraturemodulatorhavebeendesigned.Standard0.18μmRFCMOSprocesshasbeenusedforsimulation,layout,post-simulationandmeasurement.TwotypesofQVCOsaredesigned:oneiscomposedofafrequencydoublingVCOandafrequencydivider;theotheriscomposedtwocoupledVCOs.Theformerusestheswitchedcapacitorarray,whichenlargesthefrequencybandrangeandreducesphasenoise;thelattermainlyusesthesplittingswitchedbiasingandthecapacitycouplingtechnique,whichhasbetterphasenoiseandgoodphaseerror.Theformerchiptestresultsshowthattuningfrequencybetween1.59GHzto2.37GHz,thephasenoiseis-114.7dBc/Hz@1MHz;thelatterachievesafrequencytuningrangefrom896.5MHzto1.068GHz,thephasenoiseis-113dBc/Hz@1MHz,whichmeetsthesystemrequests.Quadraturemodulatorhasbeendesignedbasedontheentiresystemrequirementofthefront-end,includinganI/Qupmixerandadriveramplifier.Thedesignedquadraturemodulatoriscomposedofthetransconductancestage,theswitchstage,theoutputload,thecurrentinjectionstageandthetailcurrentsource.TheDAcanrealizeseven-levelgainadjustable,tocontrolthetransmittingpowerofsignalflexibly.Thepost-simulationtellsthatI/QupmixercircuitcanrealizethreekindsofmodulationincludingDSB-ASK,SSB-ASKandPR-ASK,thenoiseofwhichis20.98dB,thecompressionpointof1dBoutputis4.85dBmandthegainis4dB.TheDAgainisupto7.8dB,thenoisefactoris18dB,andthecompressionpointof1dBoutput
