Chapter One Introduction Light in August is set in a society full of prejudices and repressions. People living there are enmeshed in different types of collisions with the society, with the social relations and with their own acts. Based on previous studies, the thesis analyzes the conflicting sides of collision in the novel according to Hegel ’s theories of collisions and tragedy, so as to expose multi-reasons which lead to the tragic destination of those characters, and the final reconciliation of the tragedy. 1.1 William Faulkner and Light in August William Faulkner was born in New Albany and then moved to Oxford, Mississippi with his family in 1897. His great -grandfather, Colonel William Faulkner had been a well-known figure in the American South. Colonel William Faulkner had ever been a plantation owner, a soldier, a writer, and a politician. He was also an entrepreneur who ran railway cause in Oxford town and the only railway in the town was built up by him. He was the legend of Faulkner family and had great impact on William Faulkner. Some of William Faulkner’s characters are created according to his great-grandfather. However, his father was contrary to his great-father. He always changed his job and never found a place to stand in firmly. William Faulkner worshipped his great-grandfather. He abandoned his father’s name and takes his great-grandfather’s instead. Being influenced by his great-grandfather, William Faulkner began to look forward to be a writer. William Faulkner had been loving reading since he was little. He had already read works of Shakespeare, Dickens, Balzac and Conrad and so on when he was ten years old. However, he was not doing well at school. He quitted after having stayed in the
