AbstractTitle:JaneAusten?sPhilosophyofLoveinSenseandSensibilityformthePerspectiveofAppraisalTheoryMajor:ForeignLinguisticsandAppliedLinguisticsName:ZhouFangSignature:Supervisor:KangJunyingSignature:AbstractSenseandSensibilitybyJaneAustenisoneoftheclassicalliteraryworksinthehistoryofEnglishliterature.Asalovestory,SenseandSensibilitychangesthestereotypedsentimentalnovelsintheearly19thcenturyandlaysaprimaryfoundationforthedevelopmentofrealisticnovels.SinceSenseandSensibilitywaspublishedin1811,studiesonSenseandSensibilitywithregardtoJaneAusten?sviewonsenseandsensibility,herfeministcriticism,themaritalviewsofAusten,thewritingstyleandthecomparativestudiesofJaneAustenandotherwritershavebeenflourishingdomesticallyandabroad(Howard,1962；Zheng,1998；Zhang,2001).However,thestudyofJaneAusten?slovephilosophybasedonappraisaltheoryisrare.AsthedevelopmentofSystemic-FunctionalGrammarbyHalliday(1985),appraisaltheorywasfirstlyadvancedbyJ.R.Martinin1992.AccordingtoMarin(2003),theappraisaltheoryconsistsofattitudesystem,engagementsystemandgraduationsystem.Undertheattitudesystem,therearethreesubsystems:affect,judgmentandappreciation;andtheengagementsystemconsistsofmonoglossandheterogloss;andingraduationsystem,forceandfocusareincluded.Onthetheoreticalbasisofappraisaltheory,thisstudyaimstomakeananalysisofSenseandSensibilityfromanewperspectivewithinthetheoreticalbasisofappraisaltheory.AndthisthesisisintendedtofindoutwhatJaneAusten?slovephilosophyisandhowherphilosophyofloveisrevealedthroughtheuseofappraisalresources.WiththeapplicationofAntcon3.2.0todostatisticanalysisofthedata,thepresentstudyrevealsthefollowingfindings:Intermsofattituderesources,theexplicitandpositiveattitudinalresourcesdescribingBrandon,Marianne,Elinor,andEdwardarerespectively80%,74.1%,53.7%and52.2%.ButthenegativeresourceusedinWilloughbyaccountsfor69%.ItrevealsthatJaneAustenisinfavorofBrandon,Marianne,Elinor,EdwardanddisapprovesWilloughby,whichindicatessheappreciatestrueloveandobjectstolovepurelybasedontheattractionofappearanc
