Chapter1IntroductionPurposeoftheStudyInthelastseveraldecades,therewasageneraltendencyinlanguageteachingthatsecondlanguageteachingbegantoemphasizeteachinglanguageasacommunicativetoolandithasnolongerfocusedonthelanguageitself.Asaproductofthistendency,content-basedinstruction,CBIforshort,hasbeenusedasamethodologytoimprovelearners’languagecompetenceallaroundtheworld.InChina,thereisateachingmethodwhichisderivedfromcontent-basedinstructionandsharesthesamemethodologicaltheorieswithit,calledthebilingualinstruction.SincetheMinistryofEducationinChinapublishedSuggestionsAboutEnforcingBachelorEducationandAdvancingTeachingQualityofHigherEducationin2001,thebilingualinstructionhasbeenwidelylaunchedinuniversitiesalloverChina.Inlanguageteaching,languagelearnerstendtobeinfluencedbybothinternalandexternalfactorswhichcancauseeitherapositiveoranegativeeffectontheirsuccessinlearningasecondlanguage.Amongthesefactors,oneparticularoneisthelearningstrategiesadoptedbylanguagelearnersintheirlearningprocess.Generallyspeaking,languagelearnerswhoareawareofthoselearningstrategiesandthusrespondappropriatelywouldusethetargetlanguagebetterthanotherswithagreatpossibility.Inthisexperimentalstudy,thelearningcontextofcollegeEnglishlearnersfromthetreatmentgrouphasshiftedfromtheregularCollegeEnglishcoursetoabilingualcourse.Therefore,itisofgreatsignificancetopayattentiontothechangeofsubjects’learningstrategiesanditscontributiontotheirachievementsinlearningEnglish,forthewholelearningcontexthasbeenchanged.Ingeneral,thisstudyaimstoinvestigatethechangesofESLlearners’learningstrategiesintheprocessofcontent-basedinstruction,thebilingualinstructiontobeexact,inthecontextofcollegeEnglisheducationinacertainuniversityofChina.Inthispaper,thelearningstrategieschangeshavebeenstudiedinordertofindoutwhatkindoflearningstrategiesisefficientforstudentstouseunderthebilingualinstruction.Meanwhile,theteachingandlearningprogressofthebilingualinstructionhavebeenobservedandrecorded.Thus,thispaperismotivatedbytwomajoraspects:First,s
