ResearchonpublicspaceofsuburbvillagesinShanghaiABSTRACTWiththeeconomicandsocialdevelopment,theconstitutionofsuburbvillageinmetropolislikeShanghaihasobviouslychanged,suchasinflowofmigrantworkers,goingoutofaboriginalyoungadults,agingofremainingvillagers,etc.Meanwhile,thelifestyleofvillagershassubjectedadramaticchange;suchastheincreasingtransportsmobility,leisuretimeandimmobilization.Thesechangeshavegreatlyimpactonthepublicspaceutilization.Ontheotherhand,thenewruralconstructionindevelopedregions,especiallyreconstructionproject,reformingvillageroadandotherinfrastructure,broughtopportunitiesforthedevelopmentofvillagepublicspace.Basedontheliteratureinvestigationandfieldresearch,thispaperinvestigatedthesuburbvillagepublicspaceinShanghai,definedthepublicspaceandpublicspaceboundary,andanalyzedthemainpublicspaceelements,thetypeandcharacteristicofspace,thecharacteristicsanddemandofpublicspaceactivities.ThispaperalsopredictedthetrendofShanghaisuburbsvillagepublicspaceandprovidedthereferenceforconstructionpublicspacecharactersofhavingbothtraditionalculturalandcontemporarypeoplecommunication.Thispaperdefinedthevillagepublicspacefromthreedimensionsofspaceregion,publicactivitiesandspacefunction.Villagepublicspaceisthepalacetomeetthepubliccommunicationactivitiesofthevillagers,usuallycontainingthepublicspaceexceptthefarm’sland(privatespace).Theboundaryandactualutilizationofpublicspacecouldbedividedfromthepublicandprivatespacepropertiesandactivitiescharacteristics.Inthetraditionalvillages,theboundariesofprivate-privatespaceandVIprivate-publicspacehadthecharacteristicsofconventional,duetothegeneticconnectionorthestablesocialrelationsbythelong-termgeopoliticalcontact.Inadditiontoasmallvillagebyclearwalls,hedgeclearphysicalboundariessuchasthedivisionofpublicspace,largeamountsofprivateandpublicspacesweredividedbypsychologicalboundary.Theelasticcharacteristicsofvillagepubliccommunicationactivitiesmadepublicorindividualactivitiesoftencrossingtheboundariesofpublicandprivatespaces.Onthebasiso
