The limited ampacity of transmission lines is determinate by the material strength, climate condition and the allowed maximum temperature by national standards. Considering for this, this paper analyzed the temperature rising and stress/sag response of transmission lines when it is under increasing of current capacity. To investigate the temperature field, numerical simulations basing on the finite element method (FEM) were performed to capture the heterogeneous temperature field of transmission lines under transient condition. The effects of external environmental conditions such as solar radiation, air convection and so on, were discussed carefully in the present paper. The heterogeneous temperature field on the section of the conductor was captured for the first time. In addition, the transient temperature response of the transmission lines was also obtained for the dynamic environmental condition. Further, the relationship between the heterogeneous temperature field and the parameters of external environment conditions has been analyzed in detail. The results showed that when the ampacity, surface coefficient, ambient temperature and solar radiation were high enough, the temperature estimated by Morgan method was lower. Obviously, the application of classical Morgan formula should be carefully under the above conditions. To investigate the sag/stress response, the numerical simulation basing on the finite element method (FEM) was performed to obtain the stress/sag response after the current capacity increased. The influence of the thermal strain, elastic strain, creep strain and heterogeneous temperature distribution along the transmission lines’ length were considered in this method. The results showed that this method was reliable, because compared with experiment results, the erro
