Abstract With the rapid development of modern science and technology, international contact is increasing frequently. English plays a more important role on international politics, economy, science and technology and cultural exchange etc. Learners expect to master English in a shorter time. Internationalization of every walk of life brings new challenges to college English teaching. Learners are not only required to use English in daily life, but also are required to engage in profession-related work. In order to make a joint between the requirement of society and college personnel training and to cultivate more talents to be both proficient in profession and in language, English for specific purpose entered into the view of language researchers and educators and has been carried out in several colleges. Hence, Chinese colleges set up ESP courses according to their own practical situation to adapt to the rapid development of social economy and the challenges of internationalization trend. ESP has been set up in southern and coastal part of China in recent years. The quantity of colleges and universities in Shaanxi province ranks forefront in China. Shaanxi province is a significant educational province, universities of science and engineering have particular distinguishing features. In order to have a deep understanding on the current situations of ESP teaching in these universities of Shaanxi province, questionnaires and interviews were used in this research. Questionnaires were distributed to some students in three universities of science and technology in Shaanxi province, meanwhile, the author had interviews and discussions with students and teachers. The investigation mainly covered the general background situation of ESP course, the teaching situation of ESP course and the actual teaching effects and existing problems of ESP course.
