abstract abstract IV IV Abstract For now, there are a large number of mining tailings, especially iron ore tailings, which pollute environment seriously and take plenty of land resources. If these waste tailings can be applied to mortar, it will benefit the whole social sustainable development. The feasibility of iron ore tailings preparing ordinary mortar and energy-saving mortar are worked on in this paper. First of all, the effects of iron ore tailings on properties of ordinary mortar were investigated, to fix that how much iron ore tailings replacing sand to prepare mortar is appropriate. The results of the experiment research indicated that a lot of properties of mortar were affected when iron ore tailings replaced part of sand. （1）Iron ore tailings can improve the workability of mortar. The fluidity of mortar was improved and the stratification was reduced. Mortar with 10% to 50% iron ore tailings had the best mobility. （ 2 ） When the quantity of iron ore tailings increased, cube compressive strength, axial compressive strength, flexural strength of mortar successively underwent two periods: decreased and flew up. The strength of mortar which contained 40% iron ore tailings began to increase. （3）Iron ore tailings can reduce the dry shrinkage strain value of mortar. 28 day shrinkage and Poissons ratio of mortar have dropped remarkab ly when the mortar contained more than 50% iron ore tailings. And the elastic modulus of mortar was lower when the mortar contained 30% to 50% iron ore tailings. As the quantity of iron ore tailings in mortar increased, the bend-to-press ratio of mortar was improved gradually. （4）The thermal diffusivity substantially of mortar was improved by the addition of iron ore tailings.
