Through comp aring t he quantitative characteristics of tree sp ecies composition in gap and non gap stands , t his p ap er studied t he response of main tree sp ecies to gap regeneration in t he broadleavedKorean pine forest in Changbai Mountain Natural Reserve , and expounded t he role of gap s in maintaining t he structure and diversity of t he forest . Wit h t he alternation of gap s and nongap s in t he broadleavedKorean pine forest , t he relative dominance of Korean pine vs. broadleaved trees , and of canopy layer trees vs. subcanopy and understorey layer trees changed alternatively . Gap s enhanced t he sp ecies richness , increased t he sp ecies diversity , made t he co existence of different sp ecies be possible , and t hereby , maintained t he stability of t he whole
