万方数据 万方数据 Abstract Language using is a significant process that language users constantly make linguistic choices. Before making a linguistic choice, language users, consciously or unconsciously, consider what language should be chosen to fulfill their communicative goals effectively from various perspectives according to diverse contexts and communicative purposes, and make the corresponding negotiation and regulation, then make appropriate lingustic choices. The process of choices-making and adaptation of language are consciously or unconsciously under the control of language users’ consciousness, which is known as metapragmatic awareness. All the process may reflect a certain degree of metapragmatic awareness. With various communicative goals, the salience of language users’ metapragmatic awareness varies from situation to situation. Correspondingly, the linguistic traces, also known as the indicators of metapragmatic awareness, left on the pragmatic level are different. This thesis summarizes the domestic and foreign studies on metapragmatic awareness, finding that the previous studies are not comprehensive and systematic and mainly focus on the speech discourse, news discourse and advertisment. Few studies combine the indicators of metapragmatic awareness with the appreciation of literary works. Grounded on the previous studies, the author tries to apply metapragmatic awareness to the analysis of literary works. Taking The Old Man and the Sea as a case of study, which is the innovative point of this thesis. The novel was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954, which established Hemingway’s position in the world literary arena. The language of this fiction is distinctive and expressive. The simple language and concise style make a deep impression on readers. In the process of creation, Hemingway selected and designed the words and expressions elaborately and delibarately.
