Abs Abstract Abstract Bay is the most distinctive coastal space of the long irregular coastline. The urban bay area is a kind of special urban waterfront, and the living bay area which is in the centre of the city or close to the city center, is in particularly the valuable natural resources to the city, and is beneficial to shaping the distinctive image of the coastal city. Xiamen is a subtropical coast city with rich bay resource, the relationship between the city and the sea can be summarized as: city at sea, the sea in the city, island within the bay, bay in bay and bay inside the island, the bay areas in and outside of the Xiamen island become an important carrier of the development of featured bay city. Looking mainly from the perspective of detailed urban design, and working closely with detailed urban planning, this paper takes the living bay area in urban centre as the object of study. Paper concentrates on the theme，in accordance with the framework of interpreting the topic, raising questions, analyzing problems and solving problems to organize: (1) the related concepts of the object of study were defined and explained, the superiorities of the development of the living bay area were investigated, and successful cases were focused to find out their experiences and shortages; (2) combined with bay-city Xiamen, the questions in the bay area’s urban planning and development of were listed; (3) combined with successful experiences abroad, in terms of urban planning (functional orientation, development goals, land development strategy, the core area of distribution, urban planning principles) and urban design (traffic organization, architectural design, open space design, landscape design, etc) , the paper systematically, multi-levelly explored the way to build up a compact, efficient and vibrant living bay area in urban centre; (4) articles studies were reviewed.
