You should choose which utility is best for you and use it exclusively. The ontape utility offers basic system backup, log backup, and restore capability and is run from a command line. The ontape utility must be executed by the informix login. ON-Bar was introduced with Dynamic Server, Version 7.21. It works in conjunction with the IBM Informix Storage Manager (ISM) that is provided by the most recent versions of Dynamic Server. ON-Bar can also be used with other third-party storage managers. Any devices supported by the storage manager can be used for ON-Bar backup and restore. In addition to other useful features, ON-Bar enables you to restore an instance to a specific point in time.
