Of Register, the Mixed Use of “He” and “She”

Abstract: Linguists are always interested in the relationship between language and gender. People do often adjust their speaking when gender is taken into consideration, but many people ignore the register (men and women register), and misuse “he” and “she”, leading to a serious phenomenon—linguistic sexism. As a result, the communication can not be continued. In order to avoid linguistic sexism, we must be fully aware of the use of “he” and “she” when we are speaking.
This paper talks about how to differentiate “he” and “she” in concrete contexts on the basis of Halliday’s three dimensions: field, mode and tenor of discourse. In this paper, the most important thing firstly introduced, is the reason for the misuses between “he” and “she”. And then the paper illustrates some difficulties and finally gives some suggestions corresponding to the trouble. Through analysis,
