From Folk to Screen: Analyze the Rule of Folktale Adaptation Abstract The film and television media have become the mainstream media in this day and age. To make folktale to screen-adaptation have become a trend and an irreplaceable trend of development of the story. Although the distinguished film adaptation achievements of folktale and analysis reports are so many nowadays, But most of the paper is focused on the image of the characters and the plot of structure, story theme in the variation of the isolated film and television works. No system theory was summarized and concluded to the film and television adaptation laws of folk tales. In different periods, different creators of folktale adapted for different purport, and compare their differences with each other, thus unearth the plasticity of folk tales, and explore the workings of the ideology behind the adaptation. The purpose of this paper is through the comparison and analysis of three typical folk story , which are The White Snake, Hua Mulan, Little Red Riding Hood, and their film and television works, so that to review and summarize the film and television adaptation of the situation, analyze the experience and lessons in the process of film and television adaptation, and foster strengths and circumvent weaknesses. Through inducing rule and experience, which can be all kinds of folk story follows, we can provide a new and reliable Chinese adaptation strategies for the development of Chinese folk story. In view of the folktales of different versions or original appearance can’t be ascertained for long time, therefore, this article selects the text which is the nearest to the widely circulated folktale as compared with film and television adaptation. First of all, this article compares the three folktale adaptations with each other from two aspects of the processing of the plot and characters.
