Not only ensures generator reliable running and supplying eligible electrical energy for grid, but also enhances technical indicators effectively ofelectrical power system.Therefore,the work state of excitation system was very important for generator and the whole electric power system. The state ofexcitation system should be overhauled early. The routine test of generator excitation system completed in the laboratory, such as: generator no-load voltage for a given step test and load rejection test, field suppression test and the field test and strong excitation test.This paper introduced the test purpos and method ,and what should pay attention to matters in the routine test. The amount of reference was collected analog and calculated to evaluate performance of excitation system work. When signal analysis could be obtained based on FFT transform of excitation voltage dc component and every harmonic amplitude and phase to determine the fault type, when the fault components was determining, in according to the spectrum of excitation voltage rectifier bridge fault diagnosis, in order to reduce the spectrum leakage and improve the accuracy of fault diagnosis.When the FFT transform was carried out on the excitation voltage waveform to add window time domain signal processing, we analyzed the variouscharacteristics of common window function and in time domain signal spectrum analysis under the window treatments on the result of spectrum.The fault diagnosis of the excitation system of power unit also has some problems, such as: can not be compared with the historical records; The analysis of the current equipment only running state.
