Based on the analysis and summarization of the historical accidents, this paper studies the risks of cascading failures in China Southern Power Grid (CSG) from multiple perspectives. By improving the preventive control measures, increasing the ability for failure analysis of complex incidents, developing emergency control measures and building up practical technical tools to handle cascading failures, CSG has triumphantly dealt with several complex incidents and effectively controlled the risks of cascading failures. These Blackouts tend to start from a certain component of the system, and because of inappropriate or slow control measures, unreasonable power grid structure, mal-operation of relay protection, or the full play of the above reasons, a series of component failures are thus caused, finally lead to a large area power grid failure.
