Abs Abstract Shanghai Normal University Master of Education 万方数据 万方数据 Abstract Writing has been a major concern for English language teaching in middle school. However, during many years of teaching in Nan Yang Junior High School, the author observes that students have great difficulties in English writing. Lexical chunks help accelerate the speed of information processing, increase the fluency of communicating, improve the accuracy of the language and help construct the organization of the articles. Therefore, it is possible to facilitate learners’ writing abilities by using lexical chunks. This paper aims to attest the efficiency of lexical chunks in Nan Yang Junior High School’s English teaching of writing. The author carried out an experiment which involved 60 students of Grade 8. There are 30 students in each class. One of the classes was appointed as the experimental group, where the lexical approach was employed, and the other as the controlled group, where the traditional teaching was adopted. The subjects in both classes were considered of the same language proficiency according to the pretest. The experiment lasted about one semester, from November 2015 to January 2016. Data analysis shows that the lexical approach does improve the accuracy of the language and the organization of the articles. Thus it improves students’ abilities of English writing. And students tend to use the phrasal constraints more frequently than other kinds of lexical chunks.
