When diarrhea strikes, the risk for malnutrition increases. This is because, by itself, diarrhea causes nutrient and water loss. Then there’s a tendency to withhold food due to fear that it will aggravate the diarrhea. Hence, diarrhea often leads to malnutrition. Malnutrition weakens the immune system and makes the infant more susceptible to infections that can, again, lead to diarrhea. Diarrhea is typically more persistent and severe in infants and young children with malnutrition than in children who are not malnourished.
