 PAGE 4 Abstract There are two big challenges facing human society in the new century, the environment and development. The continuous degradation of the environment has directly affected the very survival and sustainable development of human beings. How to realize a more balanced development of tourism development and environmental protection has become a critical issue that requires Hefei City and China and the whole world to address urgently.The path to sustainable tourism development will not be easy. Around the world, urgent action is needed to prevent the over-exploitation of tourism resources and to protect our environment. Hefei City, too, needs to act. Globally, the tourism ecological footprint has been widely used to measure the human demands on nature. Human consumption of the natural resources has been constantly increasing over the past four decades to result in a growing overshoot of what the Earth can supply. It has become a premise and an important guideline to understand tourism ecological footprints in Hefei City and integrate them into the sustainable development strategies for a holistic planning of environment protection in Hefei City.Six factors determine a citys tourism ecological footprint: food consumption, accommodation, transport, sight-seeing, purchase and entertainment. Measuring the trends in each of these factors, and understanding the implications, will help Hefei City in its quest to come up with innovative ways to achieve its tourism sustainable development goals while ensuring that future generations have the natural resources they need to prosper. The analysis in this paper tells us that the tourists of Hefei City during 2002-2006 had a increasing trend of tourism ecological footprints of 432559.2 hm2 h㎡, 452292 hm2 h㎡, 486273 hm2 , 511199.2 hm2 and 630822.9 hm2.
