Abstract: Soil samples were collected from prmi ary forest, natural secondary forest, P inus caribaea and A cacia
m ang ium stands in BaishaCounty, Hainan Province, for the determination of soilchem icalproperties including soil
pH, organicmatter, total and availableN, P and K. The effects of soil layers and forest stands on soil chem ical
propertieswere compared. Results showed that forest soils in the studied area were strong acidic, w ith slight or
moderate deficiency ofavailableP, andmoderatedeficiency ofavailableK ( except theprmi ary forest). Thehighest
contents of soil total and available nutrients except for available P and totalK were found in the prmi ary forest,
followed by natural secondary forest andA cac ia m ang ium stands, and the lowest inP inus caribaea stands. In soil
layerA, except for totalN and available P, significant differenceswere found for organicmatt
