Shanghaithe largest city in China The City Emblem 象征;徽章 Design of the city emblem of Shanghai was approved by the Standing Committee常务委员会 of the Shanghai Municipal People‘s Congress上海市人民代表大会 in 1990. The triangle emblem consists of a white magnolia flower 木兰花(its city flower), a large junk舢板 and a propeller推进器. The propeller symbolizes the continuous advancement of the city; the large junk, one of the oldest vessels plying Shanghais harbour, represents the long history and bright future of the port; and the large junk is set against a white magnolia flower blossoming in the early spring. Location ?Bordering on Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces on the west, Shanghai is washed by the East China Sea on the east and Hangzhou Bay on the south. North of the city, the Yangtze River pours into the East China sea .It also occupies a central location along China‘s coastline. Thanks to its advantageous geographic location, Shanghai is an excellent sea and river port, boasting easy access to the vast hinterland内地. A brief introduction of Shanghai History Shanghai began as a fishing village in the 11th century, but by the mid-18th century it was an important area for growing cotton and by the 1800s it was becoming the largest city in China. Foreigners came into Shanghai due to foreign trade after the Opium Wars鸦片战争. The British, along with the Americans and French, were allowed to live in certain territorial领土的 zones without being under the Chinese laws. As a result of all the foreigners, Shanghai became greatly influenced by Western culture, but things changed dramatically after Communism共产主义 took over. During the 1900s, opium sales along with the gambling 赌博and prostitution 卖淫that went with it brought in very big profits. After the victory of Anti-Japanese War抗日战争 in 1945, the Nationalist Chinese government was given control of the city. In 1949, Shanghai was liberated and administrated under the Communist Chinese
