Abstract Abstract NorFlash as a kind of flash memory which is applies in program storage has been widely used in smart phones, the computers BIOS chip and embedded system due to great advantages. Such as high reliability, high read speed and XIP (execute in place) and so on. Therefore, the research of its storage principle and internal structure and how to read reliably and quickly from NorFlash becomes a meaningful research content. Then design a Controller matching NorFlash will have great utility. Base on the study of technical document about NorFlash memory and design skill about FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), this paper design the overall architecture of the NorFlash controller by analyzing NorFlash memory’s operation commands and workflow. Through TOP-DOWN design method and hierarchical design ideas, NorFlash controller is split into a number of modules. Finally, the I/O interface module, the command control module and the timing control are design with the VHDL hardware description language and RTL (Register Transfer Level) describe. Under Xilinxs ISE integrated software environment, the author build the NorFlash controller simulation platform, using ModelSim software and Spansion’s NorFlash device model to execute the functional simulation. And then write synthesizable testing routine with VHDL language, the author build the controller verification platform, the complete the verification of the controller is complete, by using FPGA hardware board. In the view of the result from FPGA hardware verification, the circuit functionality and timing of this NorFlash controller can both fulfill the design requirement. The design structure and verification platformof Entire NorFlash controller is reasonable and feasible, also has good compatibility and operability.
