A A Report on the Translation of Life among th e Chinese(Chapter 12)and Journeys觑North China (Chapter 13) Postgraduate：Bao Qi Grade：2014 Major Field of Study：MTI Supervisor：Professor Xie S嫡ian Orientation：English Translation Abstract This report is a review on the translation of Chapter 1 2，a part of Life among the Chinese written by R．S．Maealay and Chapter 13，a part of Journeys in North China written by Alexander Williamson．上咖among the Chinese nmJnly narrates what China looks like from the perspective of Christian missionaries in the late Qing Dynasty．It systematically expounds matters in areas of geography，history，diplomacy, religion，law and government agency and gives detailed records on the mental state， local conditions and customs of the Chinese people．Journeys in North China introduces trips of missionaries in North China．It describes their experiences of handing out the Bible and what they have seen and heard in their trips． The part author translates in Life among the Chinese mainly introduces experiences of preaching，nmniI培schools and building churches of Christian missionaries in Fuhchau，while Journeys in North China narrates the preaching process of Christian missionaries and the information they get during their joumey from Beijing to the hometown of Confucius and Mencius along the Grand Canal which mainly reflect their e娲rts in adapting to the environment in China in spite of various difficulties and dangers and their devotion and love for causes of missionary WOrk and education． In view of the linguistic and stylistic f．eanlres．the author takes the Skopos Theory put forward by German Functionalist School as the guiding principle for this 万方数据 translation translation practice to reflect three rules of the Skopos Theory：skopos rule，coherence rule and fidelity rule．Under the macro guidance of Skopos Theory of the German Functionalist School，the author aims to present comprehensively the translation process of the translator SO
