Abstract T he in luence o nitrogen, oxygen and air addit ion on t he propane di usion lame w as studied
experimentelly by measuring the soot part icle inception limit. By subst itut ing a part o the n itrogen in t he
air by equal mole argon ( nit rogen addit ion) , or decreasing t he oxygen index o the air ( oxygen addition) ,
the lame temparatures w ere adjusted, then the e ects on the sooting limit o t hese additions w ere isolat
ed. T he results show that nitrogen addition and appropriate oxygen or air addition on t he propane di u
sion lames may reduce soot ormation.
