II II ABSTRACT Computer Numerical Control (CNC) technology has been playing an important role in the development of a country’s economy. The controller performs the automatic control of a CNC machine tool, which is the brain of the system. Researches on the motion controller is significant. The new generation motion controller is constructed with digital signal processor (DSP) and a field programmable gate array (FPGA) as the core processors, with open architecture and reconfigurable. In this structure, the FPGA implements encoder logic, I/O interface, and other glue logic functions. The DSP performs trajectory generation, servo loop controls, and communication functions, etc. However, most of the industrial motion controllers remain as black boxes to the outside users. In motion control filed, interpolation and control algorithms are our research interests. This thesis will focus on the development of an open motion control platform based on the hardware of a DSP-based control card. With this platform, it offer more freedom degrees for algorithms research. The researches on the motion control system is illuminated, especially the architecture of DSP motion controller, trajectory generation algorithms, and servo loop algorithms, etc. The main jobs include: (1) Research on architecture of a motion controller; (2) Research on the communication protocols between motion controller and PC, and the development of motion function library; (3) Research on the algorithms of trajectory generation and servo loop; (4) Develop a Windows-based CNC milling machine tool system software, and do experiments on the milling machine to testify the motion functions of the designed motion controller and validate the algorithms. At the end of this thesis, the experiments results is shown. The motion controller designed in this thesis satisfies the requirement for a CNC milling machine.
