First, three-dmi ensional response spectrum is obtained from the code response spectrum. Then each of the three acceleration components of a recor- ded groundmotion is decomposed into a number of tmi e h istoriesw ith non-overlapping frequency contents. N ext, each of the tmi e h istories is appropriately scaled so that its response spectrum m atches a specified design spectrum at selected periods. Themod ified components are used to reconstruct an updated accelerogram, and its spectrum is comparedw ith the target spectrum. The process is repeated until a reasonable match is obtained. Themethod can retain the temporal variations of the original accelerograms in the synthesized accelerogram s, and it is a new w ay for the generation of mu lti-dmi ensional artificial groundmotions.
