This facility, is generally regarded as the prototype for the modern freestanding ambulatory unit. However ,there was little further interest in ambulatory surgical care until the 1960s, when the first hospital-based ambulatory surgery units were developed. Over the past 3 decades, outpatient surgery has grown at an exponential rate, progressing from the practice of performing simple procedures on healthy patients in a physician’s offices. The formal development of ambulatory anesthesia as a subspecialty occurred with the establishment of the society for ambulatory anesthesia(SAMBA) in 1984 and with the evolution of postgraduate subspecialty training program. * By 1985, 7.3 million elective operations in the United States(34% of all elective surgical procedures) were performed on an ambulatory basis. Today, more than 60 percent of all elective surgery is performed in the outpatient surgical setting, and by the end of the century, it is expected that this number will increase to more than 70 percent. * Affiliate * Allthoug acceptability of patients at the extremes of age (I.e..,6 months and 70 years) * Monoamine oxidase inhibitors(e.g., pargyline, tranylcypromine) * Of the three key components of a preoperative assessment (history, physical examination, and laboratory testing), the medical history is clearly the most valuable.
