School of Sciences, China Pharmaceutical University, Nanjing 211198, China) Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is considered as the most common nutrition deficiency worldwide. Patients with IDA always suffer from irritability, fatigue and hypomnesis, which seriously affects their health and quality of life. Iron supplement is the most effective and broad- spectrum drugs for prevention and treatment of IDA. This article reviewed the development history of iron supplements. Based on the introduction to iron metabolism, the characteristics and categories of iron supplements were summarized. The structure, physical and chemical properties, route of administration and dose, and absorption mechanism of polysaccharide iron complex were systematically curated. The progress in applications and clinical trials of 3 new intravenous iron supplements which were about to enter Chinas market was also introduced, so as to provide references for further study on iron supplements. iron defi ciency anemia; polysaccharide iron complex; iron supplement; intravenous iron
