Magnetic devices are being replaced to for backup by the blue-ray optical disk as their huge capacity, low cost and high safety. After investigating the constitution and structure of optical library in the market and analyzing the need of load and unload for the optical disk, this paper has designed and realized a mechanical control system for the optical library based on the state machine and computer serial port communications techniques. The system could manage the initiation of the optical library, monitoring the real-time state of optical library, test and correct the location parameters of the driver and groove and control the mechanical arm to transfer the optical disk quickly, precisely and safely. The system control module is the kernel of the system and interacts with other functional module such as state monitoring module and data management module. In addition to realizing the basic function, a series job has been completed for the optimization of the optical library system. First, the load and upload time is shortened by accelerating the speed of transmission for data and instructions and choosing nearest moving path for the mechanical arm. Then we try to make the parameters of the optical library more precisely and monitoring the real-time location of the mechanical arm to make the system more accurate and reliable. At last, the system could make the mechanical arm turn to the sleep mode automatically to save energy consumption. Finally, the system could realized its functions in a specific optical library machine. The tests shows that a whole load and upload for the library is about 270 minutes which has gained much speedup than the one before optimization.
