An AutoCPAP is a device which automatically adjusts the delivered pressure based on the upper airway needs of the patient. To represent that visually the diagram on the slide represents a typical pressure profile of an auto-adjusting device over a one night period. As you can see the pressure varies between a minimum and maximum pressure over the whole night. * AutoCPAP monitors the patients breathing and is designed to only increase the pressure if the upper airway is going to collapse or has collapsed, therefore only offering treatment when you need it. Similarly the pressure will decrease if breathing normalizes and the airway is stable. In order to predict the pressure needs of an individual patient auto-adjusting devices use sophisticated algorithms, which are unique to each manufacturer. Since introduction in the 1990s auto-adjusting devices have gained a substantial proportion of the market. * * * There has been a lot of literature published comparing AutoCPAP to conventional CPAP.
