Under the circumstance of the burgeoning urban modernization, the conjuncture of urban spatial characteristics is becoming increasingly severe. Jinan, the Spring City, with the fame of its history and culture, draws the public concern and worry for its fading old-town characteristics. As the impress left by the different time frames, the old town, generally, has its distinct features, which is on behalf of the city’s peculiar style. Given all this, this thesis historically analyzes the evolution of the urban morphology and spatial structure in Jinan. Meanwhile from three perspectives of urban space, alley space and architectural space, the thesis analyzes the characteristics of the old-town urban space. Via the abundant field researches and analyzing the questionnaires, this thesis, probing into the objectification of the urban spatial characteristics, finds out the issues of the urban construction and traditional urban area protection, and finally offers a preliminary proposal to remodeling the old-town spatial characteristics. This thesis includes six chapters. Chapter1, Introduction, is mainly about the definitions of urban characteristics, and gives a clear overall introduction to the development of the domestic and the foreign studies on the urban spatial form and characteristic. Meanwhile, this portion is also mentioned the research background and research scheme. Via the research on four portions, the urban axis of “mountains, rivers, lakes, town, mountains”, the evolution of, “ Great Rivers” and “High Mounts”, the urban form and spatial construction, the region constitution affected by the “rivers ,lakes and springs” and the citizens’ cognitions of urban spatial aesthetic features.
