Abstract
Various types of high embankment are inevitable during the construction of high- grade highways in the mountains. Due to the self gravity of soil and repeated loads of vehicle, the roadbed will overall and partially sink. Then, this affects the normal operation of the transportation system and threats to the safety of peoples lives and property. The filling of the high embankment with geogrid can improve the stability of the embankment, but the effectiveness of reduce high embankment settlement and the characteristicsis of geogrid cohesive soil- mesoscopic role are not fully understood. Thus, research is very important for the theoretical value and practical significance.
To study the mechanism of action of the reinforcement and cohesive soils, PFC 2D
(Particle Flow Code in Two Dimensions) was used to simulate the pullout tests of the cohesive soil in the study. The particle displacement and the change law of sample porosity are mainly discussed in the different normal stress. The results show that the normal stress is greater, the shear strength of reinforced soil is greater. The cohesion of the reinforced soil 18.8kPa is larger than the actual soil’s cohesion 16.8 kPa. The internal friction angle is varied from 13.9 ??to 6 ??. The strength characteristic of the soil is changed.
In addition, it can be simulated the process of layered filling of the high embankment with and without geogrid by using finite difference method of FLAC3D. In case of plaid geogrid or not, it was showed that the laied geogrid has certain ability to control soil settlement and lateral displacement from the high embankment. The reduction of horizontal displacement is 8.74%, and the reduction of settlement is 3.82%. The horizontal displacement and settlement of the reinforced soil under traffic loads is reduced by 15.18% and 17.32%, which is significantly larger than its own weight field amplitude.
