ABSTRACTMax ABSTRACT Max Gluckman was one of the most important figures in the history of British anthropology,and also the very initiator of the famous Manchester school of anthropology．Based on the analysis on his works and papers，involving Analysis of a Social Situation in Modern Zululand (1 940)，The Kingdom of the Zulu of South Africa(1 940)，Custom and Conflict in Africa(1 95 6)，Order and Rebellion in Tribal彳frica(1 963)， and Politics,Law and Ritual in Tribal Society(1 965)，as well as the commentaries from other scholars，what this thesis would discuss contains the biography and the academic background of Gluckman，also the theories in his several books of different periods，by which we can clarify how Gluckman’S study proceeded along the parallel of two perspectives，‘‘social relationship’’and‘‘process’’，and for the sake of theorization，finally being incorporated into the concept‘‘custom”． Gluckman’S social theory on how various customs absorb the contradictory principles in themselves is the main point we should introduce，besides，we will also give a description on his historical study about the rebellious circle in the states of south AfriCan． Moreover,we would point out that，the dialectical style permeating in his writings deserves to be highlighted，while the well known conflict argument is merely no more than a part of this dialectical system．In 3 addition，this addition，this dissertation to some extent explores his theories on kingship and ritual，as well as the morphological classification of society for comparison，and his anthropological study on law．The relationship between Gluckman and other anthropologists concerned would be referred to in the concluding paragraphs．However,this thesis also makes the criticism on Gluckman indispensable．Based on his national tradition of academy and cultural background，the preoccupying European concepts like nation-state，holy sovereign，and law rights call be brought to light．And his own political stand affects the theorizati
