Throughout this presentation the product should be referred to as Shell Tellus Oil. A hydraulic system may be perfect with respect to design and construction, but if the fluid that is used is either initially unsuitable or is in an improper condition, the operation of the equipment will be unsatisfactory, and damage to the unit may result. Selecting the proper fluid and then maintaining the fluid in good condition are just as important to the smooth, efficient operation of a hydraulic system as the choice of the equipment itself. The importance of the selection and maintenance of the fluid was demonstrated by the results of a survey conducted for the purpose of classifying the various causes of operating difficulties in industrial hydraulic systems. The results of the survey revealed the following information in regard to the troubles that were encountered: ·?10% of the operating difficulties were due to an improper diagnosis of a problem or a lack of knowledge in making repairs. ·?10% of the operating difficulties were due to mechanical failures (bearing failures due to misalignment, seal failures due to dirt, etc.). ·?5% of the operating difficulties were due to the operation of units beyond their recommended limits of speed, pressure, or volume. ·??5% of the operating difficulties were due to miscellaneous unclassified causes that range from excessive packing friction on hydraulic rams to chatter that results from inadequate lubrication of ways. ·??70% of the operating difficulties were due to improper hydraulic fluid condition. The results of this survey showed that 70% or more of the service complaints could have been eliminated or greatly reduced in severity by selecting the proper type and grade of quality hydraulic fluid and then performing proper fluid maintenance.
