IntroductionToday’s world is diversifying and changing, so the culture has been diversified with the arrival of different nationalities and races. Different races have different cultures and thus they lead to cultural differences. For example, dragon has some different connotative meanings in Western culture comparing with?龙 in Chinese culture. From the comparison between dragon and?龙, we could easily find that they are different animals?.Through all the analysis on their origin, cultural connotation and other aspects, translating龙into dragon seems not appropriate. Considered for the convenience of this article’s writing, the Chinese word?“龙” should be displaced temporarily by the Chinese Pinyin—“Long” to differ from the Western dragon.We can see that plentiful distinctions between Long and dragon in many aspects, such as their origin, their cultural connotation, their position in different countries in this article and so on. These differences reflect the two different kinds of historical and cultural backgrounds as well as two approaches to life and ways of living and thinking. The difference between Chinese culture and English culture can be indicated through exploring the connotative meanings of the word?“Long” and?“dragon”. The different?“Long” culture is very useful for the better understanding of the two nations and will bring a lot of benefits for cultural communication.The main purpose of this study is to compare Long in China with dragon in Western country from their origin and cultural connotations to show the discrepancies and discuss the cultural images of Chinese Long.Ⅱ. Dragon Culture in China and Western CountriesA. Origins of Chinese Long and Dragon1. The Origin of Chinese LongThere are a lot of origins about long in ancient china, for instance lizard, crocodile and dinosaur and so on. People regarded Long as totem in ancient times. At that time Chinese people admire
