Landscape ecolog is an interdisciplinar field that has been rapidl developing in the past few
decades. New ideas and perspect ives that emphasize spatial heterogeneit , hierarchical linkages,
and interactions betw een pattern, process, and scale have given the field an unique and significant
identit . T his paper is intended to review and s nthesize the recent advances in landscape ecolog ,
presenting a set of core concepts and theories, which include scale, pattern- process, spatial het-
erogeneit , edge effect , hierarch theor , patch d namics, patch- corridor- matrix model, island
biogeographic theor , metapopulation theor , landscape connect ivit , neutral models, and percola-
